Parents, students and teachers have long complained
of environmental contamination at Andrew Jackson Middle School
and of health problems that they or their loved ones have suffered as a result of the situation. Recently, more than 200 parents and concerned citizens attended a community meeting to discuss problems with mold, dust and/or other environmental contaminants in the school building.
Exposure to excessive levels of environmental contaminants such as mold and dust has been found to cause symptoms that can include respiratory and skin irritation, allergic reactions, flu-like symptoms, headaches, diarrhea, fatigue, aggravation of asthma, dizziness, liver damage, memory problems, trouble focusing on mental tasks and impaired/altered immune functions. Many of these symptoms have been suffered by current and former students and teachers.
Kanawha County school officials have acknowledged the existence of contaminants including mold and dust at Andrew Jackson. Although county school officials say these contaminants were first discovered in the school in July, 2008, there is evidence that the problem has been present at the school for more than a decade.
