Charleston Nursing Home Bed Sores Lawyers

A bed sore is frequently an indicator of nursing home negligence. Bed sores are caused by prolonged pressure on an area of the body. When nursing home employees fail to take measures to prevent bed sores, elderly residents may suffer negative health consequences and potentially death.

At The Bell Law Firm, PLLC, we understand that bed sores are not typical injuries. When nursing home employees fail to provide adequate care, innocent victims suffer. If a loved one has a bed sore due to nursing home negligence, please contact us to find out how we can help. We offer free consultations.

Signs of Bed Sores

Bed sores (also known as pressure sores and decubitus ulcers) occur after prolonged pressure on an area of the body cuts off blood flow and ultimately kills the tissue in that area. Although bed sores are usually caused by the failure to relieve pressure, they can also be caused by poor nutrition or failure to keep the body clean. Individuals who are bed-ridden, confined to a wheelchair by paralysis, or unable to move themselves are especially prone to bed sores.

Preventing Bed Sores

Nursing homes should be taking measures to prevent their patients from getting bed sores. Some ways to prevent bed sores are:

  • Turn / reposition body every two hours
  • Inspect areas of body where bed sores are apt to appear (legs, heels, shoulders, hips, back, buttocks, etc.)
  • Keep skin clean / change bed sheets often
  • Use pressure-reducing aids
  • Massage skin

Untreated bed sores can become large open sores that are prone to infection. These serious injuries can progress rapidly and cause damage to muscles and bones, and even lead to death.

Nursing homes often deny responsibility when one of their residents gets a bedsore. They often blame the person's old age. They refuse to admit that their own negligence is to blame.
