What is Happening in Nursing Homes?

When an individual brings an elderly friend or family member to a nursing home, they expect that exemplary services will be provided. Unfortunately, nursing homes are often overcrowded and understaffed - and as a result, residents are suffering.

Malnutrition and dehydration in nursing homes is happening due to a number of circumstances:

  • Individuals who need assistance eating are not receiving it
  • Individuals who are being fed feel rushed, and as a result, don't eat as much
  • Nursing home employees are inaccurately charting how much a resident eats or drinks
  • Contaminated food

Nursing homes are required to document nearly every interaction with residents, including how much they eat and drink. Recently, some facilities have started holding "charting parties", in which employees get together and falsely chart how much patients are eating to avoid problems during facility inspections. In some cases, employees have charted residents of eating meals when in fact that resident had died.

At The Bell Law Firm, PLLC, our lawyers work to uncover the truth behind nursing home neglect. When handling malnutrition and dehydration cases, we talk to former nursing home staff, examine records, and work with handwriting experts and private investigators. Examining facts allows us to craft compelling cases, working to hold nursing homes accountable for their actions.
