ZICAM RECALL LAWYER:
The sad truth is giant pharmaceutical companies and a handful of medical device manufacturers have put the public at risk by bringing dangerous or defective products to market. Zicam is a popular non-prescription zinc nasal spray. Its manufacturer markets it as a medication to shorten the duration of the common cold. On June 16, 2009—The FDA advised consumers to discontinue use of several Zicam Cold Remedy products due to the risk of anosmia, a potentially permanent loss of smell. Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of Zicam, was forced to settle over 330 cases in January 2006 involving people who alleged anosmia following use of Zicam. The FDA indicated it had received complaints from 130 consumers dating back to 1999.
The FDA issued a warning letter stating the products no longer can be marketed without FDA approval. Matrixx Initiatives previously took the position that Zicam was a homeopathic drug not subject to FDA regulation.

Zicam Manufacturer Describes Reports of Anosmia as "Completely Unfounded"
The other sad truth is in spite of widespread reports of potential problems with the medication, Matrixx Initiatives the manufacturer of Zicam refuses to warn users about the possible dangers of the drug. Matrixx Initiatives reported on their web site that the medication is "safe" in spite of an admission that they had not conducted any studies on the loss of smell.
The manufacturer of Zicam Matrixx Initiatives went even further when it released a notice on February 6, 2004 "reaffirming" the safety of Zicam. The manufacturer claimed:
Reports alleging anosmia—or loss of smell—in a small number of patients using zinc gluconate intranasal gels for the treatment of the common cold are completely unfounded and misleading.
These safety notices issued by Matrixx Initiatives were made even though the company admitted it had not conducted any studies on loss of smell and in the face of numerous user reports and news stories linking the nasal spray with anosmia.
Zicam Recall Specifics:
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has issued a warning on three zinc-containing Zicam intranasal products. The Zicam recall goes into effect immediately, today, June 16, 2009, the products are being recalled due to more than 130 reports of anosmia, or loss of sense of smell after use. The three products in question are:
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel (15mL, NDC 62750-003-10)
Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs (20 swabs, NDC 67250-003-20)
Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (20 swabs, NDC 67250-003-21)
Zicam products have regularly been sold in pharmacies, in retail shops, as well as over the Internet. If you have these products in your home, it is imperative to stop using them immediately.
According to the reports received by the FDA, many users noticed anosmia, or loss of sense of smell after using the products one time; others stated that the condition occurred after several uses. The FDA is concerned that the condition may be permanent.
If you believe you have suffered any ill effects from using Zicam, you are encouraged to speak with your health care provider right away. The FDA also asks that consumers as well as health care professionals report all cases of anosmia, or the loss of sense of smell, to the FDA’s MedWatch program
