Textalyzer Could Reduce Texting and Driving Accidents

textalyzer could curb textingNew technology is currently in development that could make it easier for police officers to enforce the ban on texting while driving that already exists in 46 states. The Textalyzer is a device that would give authorities the ability to connect to the phones of drivers involved in an auto accident and check for recent texting or emailing activity in the time leading up to the crash.

Borrowing its name from the well-known Breathalyzer test, the Textalyzer is a key component in a push to treat the issue of texting and driving less casually and more like the effective campaign of earlier decades to reduce incidents of drinking and driving. Drivers involved in accidents could be asked by the responding police officer to have their phones tested for activity immediately prior to the accident, giving law enforcement the proof needed to apply the corresponding penalty and giving the existing bans more weight than they currently have. It's an idea that could save lives.

After years of slow but steady decline, car accident fatalities are suddenly on the rise again and distracted driving seems to a contributing factor in the majority of those accidents. Distracted driving can refer to anything that causes the driver to take their eyes off the road, but in recent years, it often relates specifically to the dangerous habit of texting on hand-held devices.

Studies have shown that a driver's chance of being involved in an accident increases significantly any time they look away from the road ahead, no matter how briefly. Despite the ban on texting, authorities have found it difficult to prove and enforce the fines and penalties for doing so. But the recently proposed use of a Textalyzer could change how these laws are enforced.

If you or someone you love has been the victim of an accident caused by texting or other distractions, seeking the experienced counsel of an auto accident attorney could help you in obtaining the compensation you deserve.
