Elder Abuse: Silently Ubiquitous

The event is sponsored by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and today marks the 6th Annual WEAAD.

Communities across the globe, including: governments, states, local organizations, and innumerable non-profit organizations will get together to promote the understanding of how elderly individuals are abused and neglected.

Unfortunately, numerous studies have found that elder abuse is among the most underreported forms of abuse. Whether elderly individuals reside with families, are confined to  nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, elder abuse is rampant.

Elderly individuals are subject to abuse in many forms, including:

  • Financial theft
  • Physical and sexual abuse
  • Verbal and emotional abuse

According to the INPEA, at least five percent of elderly individuals are abused within the confines of their own homes, often by unscrupulous family members. Additionally, another 40 percent are subject to abuse in nursing homes and other residential facilities.
